1. TECHNICAL INFORMATION CONCERNING THE DOSE RATE METER 6150AD The instrument has a built-in GM counter and additionally provides a probe socket to connect external probes. If a probe is connected, the internal counting tube is automatically turned off; the detector of the probe is now measuring. The type of the probe is automatically recognized (e.g. display "ext 17" when a 6150AD-17 probe is connected). Display range and units are chosen automatically according to the type of the probe. Also, there is no fixed assignment between probe and instrument. That means you may connect any probe with any 6150AD, where probe indication will not depend on the 6150AD in use. One pin of the probe socket serves as serial interface and can be used to transmit and evaluate the display (dose rate) of the instrument on a PC. Cables to connect external probes may be up to 100 m long (depending on probe type). Standard lengths available from stock are 1.25 m, 3 m, 10 m, 20 m, 75 m, and 100 m.

| 1.1 Model summary
The basic 6150AD models are 6150AD1 to 6150AD6, henceforth generally designated as “6150ADn” (where n stands for 1 to 6). Models 6150AD1/3/5 have the same
range
of up to 1 Sv/h. They only differ in number and extent of functions,
that
is in software (EPROM). The 6150AD3 was the more intelligent successor
of the 6150AD1. The 6150AD5 is again the successor of the 6150AD3 with
additional support for the scintillator probe 6150AD-b. Likewise,
models
6150AD2/4/6 have a range of up to 10 mSv/h, where the 6150AD4 was the
more
intelligent successor of the 6150AD2, and the 6150AD6 again corresponds
to a 6150AD4 with additional support for the scintillator probe. In
that
sense models 6150AD1 to 6150AD4 are outdated (but are still available,
particularly the models 6150AD1 and 6150AD2 for those users who prefer
easier operation of a simple model). The following Table 1 summarizes
all
models 6150AD1 to 6150AD6 with their essential features.

| 1.2 Radiation quantity
Unless stated otherwise, 6150AD
and probes
are designed for photon dose equivalent (rate) Hx. Models designed for
ambient dose equivalent (rate) H*(10) get the suffix “/H” or “/E” to
their
type name. The only difference between “/H” and “/E” models is their
compatibility
with probes (seeTable 2 below). “/E” models of the probes and “/E”
models
of the 6150AD only work among each other. “/H” models work among each
other
and with Hx models. For example, a 6150AD5 works with a probe
6150AD-18/H.
Using that 6150AD5 without a probe yields Hx, whereas connecting the
6150AD-18/H
probe yields H*(10). The other way round, a 6150AD5/H works with a
probe
6150AD-18. In that case, the 6150AD/H yields H*(10), whereas connecting
the 6150AD-18 probe yields Hx. “/H” models of probes and meter offer
the
advantage that they remain compatible with older Hx meters and probes.
“/E” models are recommended in case you want to force the 6150AD's
indication
to H*(10) even when working with external probes. However, this will
require
your possibly existing Hx equipment to be upgraded to “/E” models if it
shall be used together with the new “/E” equipment. Note that the
difference
between Hx and H*(10) is not very great except at low photon energies,
see section Products/Radiation
Quantities
and Units for more information on that subject.
